Third Wave Psychotherapy
The Problem with Mind.
We are so lucky to have minds. They are certainly the primary reason that we have become so powerful as a species. Our minds are very powerful and they do many great things for us- solve problems, plan ahead, organize our world, etc. However, for many of us, letting mind be in charge of our lives can cause some serious problems.
When we do that, we can become stuck- terribly stuck. Look at how many of us keep pushing off happiness waiting for the next chapter in life. And when we reach that new chapter, we push happiness off again. And Again. And Again.
Many models of therapy involve trying to change our minds by using our minds. That's kind of like trying to use a hammer to build itself. Sounds impractical, doesn't it?
Third wave psychotherapy is an amazing shift in the focus of therapy work. Third wave psychotherapy works to change our relationship with the fact that we have minds in the first place. Through this work, we learn to use our minds to our advantage rather than being controlled by them.
Established forms of third wave psychotherapy include, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression (MBCT). We also see Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing as a third wave psychotherapy.
